Nantucket Dolphins - Team Information

Here's some information on the USS aspect of our program:

The Dolphins Swim Team is an Age Group Recreational Team that competes in the Southeastern Massachusetts Swim League (SEMSL) with 5 other teams. (Marshfield, Sandwich, Willy's East in Eastham, Team Turbo in Plymouth and Martha Vineyard)  The SEMSL is really one of the only winter Rec leagues for Swimming in Mass.  The other options for towns are to join YMCA leagues (which you need to be at a Y) or United States Swimming (USS, which we do!)

There's nearly 100 sanctioned USS Clubs or Teams in our region which is called New England Swimming (for more information, visit www.newswim.com).  Our club is called WEST/Nantucket Swimming and our Club Code is WACK.  WEST/Nantucket Swimming is in its 5th year. We are a joint venture between myself and the head coach of Willy's East, Justin Bohannon.  We've combined programs on this level because both our teams were very small and it gave our swimmers better opportunities to compete.  Also, the bond that the Dolphins swimmers form with the WEST swimmers is something very special.  Other teams from the SEMSL have also registered their swimmers under WACK.

In the regular USS season, you have your standard team specialty swim meets (we do about 1 month during the session), then comes the qualifying meets.  They are basically in this order, with a few exceptions - Regionals (90% of our Dolphins team makes regional cuts already), Age Group Championships (we'll set a handful of swimmers to this), then Sectionals, Zones, Junior Nationals, Senior Nationals, Trials then the Olympics.  So basically if you want to go to the Olympics you need to be a USS registered swimmer!

What does the USS part of the team mean to your Swimmer?

Basically we get this group into the water earlier in the season.  There are a few more fees associated with being this aspect of the team and a parent involvement is a must.  We try to compete in meets as close to the Cape as we can, typically at Mass. Maritime.  They are 3 day meets with distance events Friday Evening, the 12&Unders in the AM on Saturday and Sunday and 13&Overs in the PM on Saturday and Sunday.  For 12&U swimmers, you're looking at a 2 night stay on the Cape; 13&O swimmers, a 1 night stay.

Then there's the Qualifying Meets.  The Regional meet is in Seekonk (typically always the second weekend in February), 12&U Age Group Championships (past few years in White River Junc. VT the last weekend in February and then 13-19 Age Group Championships (@ MIT, first weekend in March).  If you registered for USS and you have cut times for any of these Qualifying Meets, I will be expecting you to be there.  Plan accordingly.
